Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radio waves used to switch off the nerves transmitting chronic spine pain.
Overview
Radiofrequency ablation uses heat generated by radio waves to interrupt the tiny medial branch nerves that carry pain signals from arthritic spinal joints. For patients who responded well to diagnostic blocks, RFA can deliver relief measured in months to years rather than weeks.
Recovery & results
Expect mild soreness for up to a week as the treated nerves settle. Full benefit is typically felt at two to three weeks and commonly lasts 9–18 months.
